The annual In Memoriam segment is always one of the most poignant moments of the Oscars’ ceremony and last night was no different.

Film makers, crew, actors and musicians who have passed away in the last twelve months are honoured during the montage and last night’s tribute featured The Vampire Diaries staffer Sarah Jones, who tragically died on the set of Gregg Allman biopic Midnight Rider late last month.

Jones had been working on the film when a tragic accident occurred and it’s been reported that a train crashed into a bed the crew were using for a dream sequence. After her passing, fans and colleagues from hit CW show TVD launched a petition to get her death marked at the Academy Awards. Yesterday she was featured in the live telecast and though she wasn’t included in the video clips, her name was listed in a bar that ran across TV screens around the world.

However one notable omission from the segment was Glee star Cory Monteith.

The actor passed away last July after overdosing in a hotel room. He was best known for his small screen work but Monteith also starred in 2011′s Monte Carlo, Glee: The 3D Concert Movie, and more.

Cory was however listed on the Oscars In Memoriam gallery on their website.

Meanwhile, on a more light hearted note, Benedict Cumberbatch pulled a funny last night as he walked the red carpet.

Irish rock band U2 posed for photographers outside the plush venue, before entering the hall for their big performance. They were casually minding their own business and smiling for the cameras when the smiling Sherlock star crept up behind the stars and hilariously photobombed them from above.

U2 later performed their Oscar-nominateed song Ordinary Love from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. They received a standing ovation from the audience and Benny was nowhere to be seen.

Cumberbatch and his new pal Brad Pitt later pulled the same trick on show host Ellen DeGeneres though.
