The last film to feature Metallica was the raw, exposing documentary, Some Kind of Monster. Metallica: Through The Never is a different beast all together, a celebration of the bands 30 years together wrapped up in a hugely imaginative live show, incorporating their iconic album covers on stage. There's no navel gazing in this outing for the heavy metal heavyweights and you'd best warn the neighbours now because frankly you'll be wanting to plug in the surround sound and turn it up to eleven.

Alongside the crunching guitars, thunderous drums and earth shattering bass is the tale of young roadie Trip (rising star and Leonardo DiCaprio look-a-like Dane DeHaan). We follow Trip as he is given a mission during the concert to retrieve a truck that has run out of petrol somewhere in the middle of the city. On board the truck is a mysterious object (sure to rival the briefcase in Pulp Fiction for speculative post film discussion) that the band need before the end of the show. What follows is a bizarre, apocalyptic vision of the city, with Trip running for his life as he finds himself in the centre of rioting anarchists and a hammer wielding, masked madman on horseback. These scenes are gorgeously photographed and it appears to be no coincidence that our young protagonist is named Trip as we see him pop a pill and then experience an adventure of pure fantasy. Aside from singing along to concert opener, Creeping Death, and yelling once more during the course of the movie, DeHaan remains speechless and silent throughout, using his hugely expressive face to convey all he needs to.

Director Nimród Antal commands proceedings with a pleasingly imaginative eye, servicing the concert footage every bit as well as he does the narrative thread. Antal takes the camera and places it and the audience at the heart of the action, be it up close to guitarist Kirk Hammett's dancing fingertips or in the centre of a combustion engine. Cameras sweep over mosh pits and over the stage, they dance in between the band members legs and they capture the power and sheer exhilaration of a heavy metal show.

And what of Metallica themselves? Well anyone that has been to one of their live shows knows exactly what to expect in terms of quality. This is a band on top of their game, like a football team that has grown together and know exactly what their team mates are thinking, these four musicians are sitting pretty at the top of the premier league with at least a 20 point lead. Front man James Hetfield understandably gets the lion share of screen time like any lead singer would, that he's a mass of charisma is just icing on the cake while drummer Lars Ulrich pulls the best rock faces, gurning like Albert Steptoe when he's up to mischief. Robert Trujillo (bass) plays with his legs bent and apart, swinging his long black hair like a angry silverback, staking his claim on the stage and Hammett displays some nifty fretwork on his gorgeously painted Universal horror themed guitars.

This is no mere concert movie with a narrative thread that weaves in and out of the concert footage and while Metallica: Through The Never is unlikely to convert any non-fans of the band, it will more than satisfy the faithful and is almost certain to bring back those former devotees who may have mellowed their tastes over the years.

Pump your fists in the air, proudly thrust your horns to the screen and embrace your inner metal-god.
