VIP and networking mixer

LAUGHLIN — The Laughlin Chamber of Commerce will host a Networking and VIP Appreciation Mixer in the Starview Room at the Riverside Resort on Tuesday, Feb. 18, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Nevada time. The cost is $10 for chamber members and $15 for nonmembers; there is no charge for chamber VIP members who have volunteered 15 hours or more during the past year.

Pow Wow at Mojave Event Center

LAUGHLIN — The Avi Kwa Ame Pow Wow will take place Feb. 14, 15 and 16 at the Mojave Event Center, directly across the Colorado River from the Avi Resort and Casino. Admission is $5 per day or $8 for a two-day pass.

    Free tax filing services

    LAUGHLIN — The AARP is once again providing trained and certified volunteer tax counselors who will provide free tax assistance for low to moderate income individuals of all ages. Free federal and state e-file service is available, which provides for greater accuracy and rapid refunds.

    The service will be provided at the Laughlin Library, 2840 Needles Highway, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Thursday beginning Feb. 6 and continuing through April 10.

    Taxpayers are asked to bring the following items with them: a copy of last year’s tax return; W-2 forms for each employer; SSA-1099 for any Social Security benefits that were received during 2013; all 1099 forms (1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-MISC, etc.); Form 1099R if a pension or annuity was received; child care provider information; Social Security cards for all dependents; and a photo ID for the taxpayer and spouse.

    The service is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Buglers needed

    LAUGHLIN — Chuck Minerman, 1st vice commander of American Legion Post 60 in Laughlin, has put out a call for individuals interesting in supporting the area’s civic and military functions where the playing of TAPS is required. Musical ability is not necessarily a requirement, as the Post’s ceremonial bugle contains an electronic unit that plays eight different bugle calls. The buglers’ primary function is to turn the unit on and hold the bugle to their lips while the music is playing.

    The IV Tenors to Perform at Aquarius Pavilion

    LAUGHLIN — The IV Tenors, a talented quartet who sings a variety of music ranging from country to Broadway, will perform at the Aquarius Pavilion inside Aquarius Casino Resort on Saturday, Feb. 15. Show time is 7 p.m.

    “This one-night-only performance has something for everyone, making The IV Tenors concert a perfect Valentine’s weekend treat,” said Aquarius Casino Resort General Manager Sean Hammond.

    Always a crowd favorite, veteran performers Brian Damson, Michael Scott Brooks, Morgan James and Ken Nielson are four big guys with four big voices who bring Broadway classics to life, rock the stage with songs by Michael Bubl/, Bon Jovi, Frankie Valli and Puccini, and even belt out beautiful opera pieces sure to capture the heart.

    Damson, the foursome’s resident comedian, has performed in musical theater and is an award-winning actor and cabaret performer. Brooks has been a working professional singer and pianist since age 15 and has performed at clubs, events, TV appearances and stages around the United States and Europe.

    James has performed with stars like Dean Martin, Barry Manilow, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Andy Williams and Bob Hope. Nielson sings, acts, dances and has traveled the world performing for Walt Disney Productions, cruise lines and off-Broadway productions.

    Doo Wop dinner show

    LAUGHLIN — A Doo Wop dinner show will take place at the Edgewater E-Center with entertainment by Cornell Gunter’s Coasters, Monroe Powell and The Platters Revue, and Bobby Hendrick’s Drifters, on Feb. 28 and March 1 and 2.     Mardi Gras, St. Paddy’s fests

    LAUGHLIN — Two spring festivals are set for the Colorado Belle-Edgewater Riverwalk in March, and each will features free live entertainment in an outdoor atmosphere.

    Celebrate Mardi Gras on the Riverwalk March 7-9 with two authentic zydeco and blues bands, Mark St. Mary and Bennie and the Swampgators, and food vendors offering southern specialties. Festival hours are 4-9 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

    On St. Patrick’s Day weekend, March 14-16, the Belle and Edge invite everyone to enjoy Irish beverages and free live entertainment by Killian’s Angels and Paddy’s Pig. Event hours are 4-9 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

    Scaling the Strat

    LAUGHLIN — Aquarius Casino Resort team members will take steps to help end lung disease in Nevada by participating in the sixth annual “Scale the Strat” on Sunday, March 2 at Aquarius’ sister property Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower in Las Vegas.

    “Scale the Strat” is an extreme stair climb event that helps raise money for the American Lung Association in Nevada’s mission of preventing lung diseases and promoting lung health.

    “Scale the Strat is our major fundraiser,” said American Lung Association in Nevada Executive Director Allison Newlon Moser. “It has been exciting to see this extreme stair climb event grow year after year.”

    Hundreds of athletes of all abilities will climb 108 floors and 1,455 steps inside the iconic Stratosphere Tower, the highest building west of the Mississippi River. Aquarius team members are challenging every member of the Tri-state area to participate and help those in Nevada that are struggling to breathe every day.

    “Be warned. This is not an easy event,” said Aquarius Casino Resort General Manager Sean Hammond. “Yet every year we have more and more Aquarius team members and community members from the Tri-state area willing to fundraise and Scale the Strat to support this very important cause.”

    This is the fourth consecutive year Aquarius team members will join other employees from American Casino & Entertainment Properties sister properties in Las Vegas, the Stratosphere Casino Hotel & Tower and Arizona Charlie’s, on their joint stair-climbing team the “Stratospheric Scalers.”

    Last year, nine Aquarius team members laced up their running shoes to participate in the event and collectively raised an impressive $3,700 to help fund the American Lung Association’s mission.

    Willie Nelson & Family returns

    LAUGHLIN — Country music icon and legend Willie Nelson returns to the E Center Saturday, March 29.

    The creative genius behind historic recordings like “Crazy,” “Hello Walls,” “Red Headed Stranger” and “Stardust,” Nelson’s career has spanned six decades with a catalog of over 200 albums.

    In the last five years alone he delivered 10 new releases, two of which received Grammy nominations, and a career-spanning box set. He released his first novel and again headlined Farm Aid, an event he co-founded in 1985, all the while continuing to lobby against horse slaughter and producing his own blend of biodiesel fuel.

    LAUGHLIN — The American Legion Richard Springston Post 60, 1510 Bruce Woodbury Drive, will continue to sell a full line of See’s Candy, through Valentine’s Day and Easter weekend. All revenue generated will be donated to the various charities sponsored by the post.

    The candy will also be available for purchase at the Tropicana Express and Aquarius Casino Resort on Valentine’s Day weekend and Easter weekend.

    Elks to host Veterans social

    LAUGHLIN — Laughlin Elks Lodge 2872 is hosting a Veterans Social on Sunday, Feb. 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. at American Legion Post 60 in Laughlin. Veterans are encouraged to drop by the Post, meet their fellow Elk members and socialize with their friends and neighbors. Finger food and appetizers will be served.

    Senior Valentine’s Day Bingo

    Bullhead City — Sunridge Village, 839 Landon Drive in Bullhead City, along with area business partners, will host a special Bingo on Friday, Feb. 14, at 9 a.m. MST. Anyone 65 years and older will receive one free Bingo card. Additional cards will also be given to those who RSVP, bring a friend new to the community and provide an email address.     Benefits of Chamber membership

    BULLHEAD CITY - Nicole Smith from the Bullhead Chamber of Commerce will be the keynote speaker Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 1:30 p.m. MST at Sunridge Village, 839 Landon Drive in Bullhead City.     Antique show at Avi

    LAUGHLIN — The Remember When Antiques and Collectibles Show, now in its sixth year, will take place in the Grand Ballroom of the Avi Resort Feb. 21 through 23.

    Antique dealers from all over the western United States and some from as far away as Michigan and Canada will be displaying vintage clothing, antique furniture, toys, glassware, western items, pottery, silverware, linens, crystal, china and more.

    As in years past, a local appraiser will be available to provide free assessments on small, hand-carried items: There is a three-item limit.

    Show hours are 12 noon until 5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday.

    There is no charge to attend the show, which helps support the River Valley Artists Guild, a nonprofit organization that provides grants to local high school and college art students.

    LAUGHLIN — The office of the Southern Nevada Health District/Laughlin Public Health Center has moved.

    Town Fest and parade

    LAUGHLIN — Make plans now to participate in the 2014 Town Fest parade, which will be held Saturday, March 15, in Laughlin. This year’s theme is Wild, Wild West. There is no fee to enter the parade, but each participant must complete an application form.

    As in previous years, parade entrants will be classified in one of seven categories: commercial, band, pet/animal, civic club, dance/drill/marching group, neighborhood and other.

    Additionally, sponsors are being sought for the plaques that will be awarded to the winning parade entries. Cost of sponsorship is $100 each, and the donor’s name will be engraved on the trophy. The $100 fee not only pays for the plaque but, also, helps to defray the cost of insurance for the parade.

    The parade will be held in conjunction with the four-day Town Fest, which will be held March 13 - 16 at Laughlin Town Center. Festivities will include a carnival, food, live music and a beer garden. All proceeds will go towards the purchase of a community tent.

    El Garces pavers still available

    NEEDLES — The nonprofit Friends of El Garces organization is still selling brick pavers that can be used as a memorial or commemorative item.

    The pavers will be placed around the fountain once renovation for the El Garces Harvey House is complete.

    Pavers cost $75; $50 for a duplicate brick. Forms can be picked up at the Needles Chamber of Commerce, 100 G St., or at the Needles Regional Museum, 929 Front St.

    TOPOCK — The Bullhead City Lions Club invites all classic car and motorcycle owners to their second annual Roarin’ on the River car show on Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event takes place at Topock66 Bar and Grill. Proceeds assist local community members with vision and hearing needs.

    Ombudsmen offers HOA info

    LAUGHLIN — Laughlin residents with questions about homeowners’ associations and how they work are invited to the Laughlin Library, 2840 Needles Highway, on Monday, March 10, when a representative of the Nevada Office of the Ombudsman for Owners in Common-Interest Communities and Condominium Hotels will be on hand for two classes relating to HOAs.

    The first class, entitled Executive Board Responsibilities, will be held from 10 a.m. until noon.

    The second class, entitled Reserve Studies, will take place from 12:30 until 2 p.m.

    Social Services to provide info

    LAUGHLIN — Laughlin’s Social Services Committee, a standing committee of the Laughlin Town Advisory Board, invites the public to its meeting on Tuesday, Tuesday, Feb. 18. On that date, officials with Clark County Social Services Department will give a presentation on the services and opportunities that are available through that department for Clark County residents.

    On Tuesday, March 18, representatives of East Family Family Services will be on hand to provide information about their organization.

    The meetings, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. on both dates, will be held at the Regional Government Center, 101 Civic Way in Laughlin.

    Support group for Alzheimer’s caregivers

    LAUGHLIN — The Desert Southwest Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association sponsors an ongoing support group for current and former caregivers of patients with the disease, where they can share information and experiences, build new skills and offer peer support and ideas.

    The group meets at 10:30 a.m. the third Thursday of each month at American Legion Post 60, 1510 Bruce Woodbury Drive in Laughlin.

    LAUGHLIN — The Lake Havasu Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in partnership with Bouse Genealogical Society, announces their upcoming Genies in the Desert workshop, an all-day event set for Saturday, Feb. 15, at the LDS facility, 504 N. Acoma Boulevard in Lake Havasu City.

    The event, which begins with registration at 8 a.m., will include 20 classes offered in five different tracks. Topics will be of interest to both beginning and experienced researchers. Speakers include representatives of the LDS, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Bouse and the Lake Havasu Genealogical Societies.

    Registration at the door is $15 per person.

    Tri-State Shooting Park open

    MOHAVE VALLEY — The Tri-State Shooting Park is now open to the public on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon. Trap and skeet are offered at $5 for 25 clays.

    Facilities at the Boundary Cone Road facility include two trap fields with skeet overlays, a 200 yard pistol and rifle range and a 50 yard pistol range. Annual memberships are available.

    Colorado Open soccer tourney

    BULLHEAD CITY — The 16th annual Colorado River Open Invitational Tournament will be held Feb. 15-17 at Rotary Park.

    The three-day soccer tournament will feature four games per team and parking is free.

    There are already 116 teams signed up for the invite, and the maximum amount of squads is 120.

    All players will receive a T-shirt and pin. First-, second-, third-, and fourth-place teams will receive a medal, as well as a trophy for the coach.

    Referees will receive T-shirts, and the referees who sign up for final games will receive a referee gift and raffle ticket for prizes.

    Murder at the Library

    LAUGHLIN — Lovers of live theater, especially murder mysteries, should make plans now to attend the Laughlin Library’s production of Murder at Gooseneck Lake, an interactive whodunit where members of the audience team up to cross-examine the suspects and pool their detective skills to nab the perpetrator.

    Set in a small community in Maine, a party has begun at the Gooseneck Lake Lodge and Lending Library to honor Stella R. Skoop, winner of a 2007 Howitzer Prize in Journalism. Stella is expected to enter the Great Room at any moment to revel in her guests’ adulation and drop some hints about her upcoming articles, when ….
