On Tuesday, reports about Manny Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather Jr. gaining steam surfaced to plenty of fan reaction and excitement.

Well, before Pacman can look forward to finally making the mega-bout happen, he must first defeat New York challenger Chris Algieri on Saturday night in Macau. The final press conference before the fight will be held Wednesday. Algieri, 30, is undefeated at 20-0 with eight knockouts, but has never fought a boxer like Pacquiao. Pacman’s trainer, Freddie Roach, says the champion will defend his WBO welterweight crown in one round.

"Manny told me, ‘One round,’" Roach told Newsday on Tuesday. "He’s never done that. He won’t repeat it, but that’s what he said: ‘One round.’ He wants to prove to everyone that he can still punch. That’s why he went to the catchweight at 144. He’s never been a puncher at 147. He’s only knocked out two welterweights. That’s why the drop in weight. We feel good at 144."

To make that come to fruition, Pacquiao will need to overcome Algieri’s height and reach advantage of five inches with his speed and quickness that Algieri has never been up against before. Pacquiao is 56-5-2 with 38 knockouts, approaching his 36th birthday next month. Saturday night’s fight will be on HBO pay-per-view.

A dominating Pacquiao win could pave the way for HBO, which represents him, and Showtime, which backs Mayweather Jr., to finally bring the fighters in the ring next year.
