Sky Movies Drama, 9.45pm

A sprawling rock opera based on a hit Broadway show, Adam Shankman’s ‘Rock of Ages’ is messy and a little long but very likeable, mainly because it wholeheartedly embraces its essential campness.

Julianne Hough stars as a smalltown girl who arrives in Los Angeles with high hopes of making it in the music business. When she’s mugged and left stranded on Sunset Strip, a young man befriends her and gets her a waitressing job at a legendary rock venue called the Bourbon Room. The club is run by an ageing rocker called Dennis Dupree (a hilarious Alec Baldwin), but has fallen on hard times, and will only survive if flashy rock star Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise, above) agrees to play a free concert there.

Tom Cruise hams it up commendably and Russell Brand co-stars. Passport to Pimlico (1949)

Film Four, 3.10pm

Stanley Holloway and Margaret Rutherford star in this Ealing comedy set in wartime London. When an explosion in the heart of Pimlico unearths a charter linking the district to Burgundy in France, the locals declare an independent state in order to free themselves from the purgatory of rationing.

To Rome with Love (2012)

Sky Movies Comedy, 4.20pm

The Italian capital gets the Woody Allen treatment in this imperfect but very likeable ensemble comedy, and Woody himself plays an anxious New Yorker who finds the going tough when he comes to Italy to attend his daughter’s marriage to a suave Roman architect. Ellen Page stars.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)

UTV, 7.30pm

In the fourth of the Harry Potter films, young Master Potter’s involvement in the prestigious Triwizard tournament turns sour when it becomes clear that Voldemort’s spies have involved themselves in the proceedings. Daniel Radcliffe stars.

Idiocracy (2006)

Sky Movies Comedy, 11.15pm

Luke Wilson and Maya Rudolph star in this Sci-fi comedy about a not very bright army private who is chosen as a guinea pig in a top secret hibernation experiment. When he wakes up 500 years later he discovers that society is so dumbed down that he’s the brightest person in America. With Stephen Root, Terry Crews and Justin Long.

Adam and Paul (2004)

Film Four, 11.25pm

Lenny Abrahamson and Mark O’Halloran’s marvellous and touching comic drama follows the fortunes of two Dublin heroin addicts who attempt to scrounge and rob enough money for a fix duing a hectic and farcical day. With Tom Murphy.
