NORWALK — Dr. Muriel Gerhard, a Norwalk resident, former system-wide science supervisor for the Norwalk public schools, and frequent contributor to The Hour’s editorial page, will be featured on Cablevision’s channel 88, in the program called The Carousel, at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27, and at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29.

Gerhard presents a view of the innovative nature of our school system and some of the new directions being explored, such as P tech at Norwalk High.

NAACP to sponsor

Town Hall meeting

NORWALK — The Norwalk Branch NAACP is sponsoring a Town Hall Meeting to discuss views and concerns regarding recent national incidents — specifically Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and and Eric Garner in NYC — from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, in the Council Chamber Room in Norwalk City Hall.

Norwalk’s Labor Day

garbage schedule

NORWALK — On Monday, Sept. 1, which is Labor Day, garbage and recycling collection services will follow the holiday schedule.

Garbage normally picked up on Monday, will be picked up on Tuesday. Tuesday routes will be picked up on Wednesday, and so on until Friday routes are picked up on Saturday.

Recycling normally picked up on Monday, will be picked up on Tuesday. Tuesday routes will be picked up on Wednesday, and so on until Friday routes are picked up on Saturday.

The Norwalk Transfer Station, located at 61 Crescent Street, and the Yard Debris Site, located at 15 South Smith Street, will both be closed on Monday, and reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday. Seaport Association

to hold golf tourney

NORWALK — The Norwalk Seaport Association will hold a golf tournament on the Main Course at the Silvermine Golf Club on Monday, Oct 6. Registration and check in will start at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Shot gun start at 1 p.m.

Lunch and dinner will be served at the Silvermine Golf Club. There will be prizes for Hole In One, 50/50 hole, Longest drive and closest to the pin. Gift package for every player. Registration is required. Tickets are $185 per person and can be made online at www.seaport.org.

Computer Open House at Center

NORWALK — On Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 12:30 p.m. the Computer Learning Center will present a program explaining the many computer classes offered at the Norwalk Senior Center. The fall courses offer training for beginning computer users as well as those seeking further help with photos, Microsoft Office, and other more advanced programs. Classes on the iPad, iPod and iPhone will also be discussed. This is an opportunity to meet the instructors, get a brief overview of the courses, and register for fall classes.

Chorale looking

for more singers

NORWALK — The Norwalk Community Chorale welcomes all singers, especially basses and tenors, to join its 75-member, four-part chorus. Now in its 54th season, the Chorale has performed two free concerts each year featuring a wide variety of musical entertainment under the expert direction of Brian Muller.

Rehearsals for the fall concert begin at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, in the Mary McCarthy room adjacent to Norwalk Concert Hall, 125 East Ave. There are no auditions or residency requirements. Lifetime Learners

NORWALK — If you are over age 50, you’re invited to participate with over 800 other people in a variety of day-time non-credit courses. Most classes start in mid-September with the non-profit Lifetime Learners Institute at Norwalk Community College.

Subjects include: Health, Music, History, Arts, Language, Religions, Travel, Literature, Science, Culture, Genealogy, Movies, Current Events, Computers, etc. All two-hour classes meet once a week, without stress or tests, and run from four to eight weeks.

Classes meet at 1 and/or 3 p.m. Monday thru Thursday and at 10 a.m. on Friday, followed by a special guest presentation at 1 p.m. each Friday.

Interpreters needed

for AmeriCares clinic

STAMFORD — The Bob Macauley AmeriCares Free Clinic of Norwalk is seeking interpreters fluent in both Spanish and English to help doctors and patients better communicate. Volunteers are needed to work one four-hour shift per month on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and be able to effectively communicate medical terminology including treatment instructions from medical professionals.

The clinic serves low-income Fairfield County residents without health insurance. The Bob Macauley AmeriCares Free Clinic is located inside the South Norwalk Community Center at 98 South Main St.
