GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Big names are coming through town over the next few days with Kevin James and Katy Perry putting on shows. There are even more events you can add to your social calendar by checking out this edition of the Top 5.

Kevin James at DeVos Performance Hall

Kevin James, star of films such as “Here Comes The Boom,” “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” and “Zookeeper” will bring his stand-up comedy to DeVos Performance Hall, 303 Monroe Ave. NW, on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 8 p.m.

James’s comedy career started well before his breakout role in the film “Hitch” opposite Will Smith. He was discovered at the Montreal Comedy Festival in 1996 and soon after signed a development deal that would lead to his popular TV sitcom “The King of Queens” which ran for nine seasons on CBS. The everyman-style comedian is an avid golfer and recently completed a sequel to the “Paul Blart” movie due out in 2015.

OMG Music Festival at The Intersection

The OMG Music Festival is a compilation concert of nine artists, some as young as 14, taking the stage in one night of performances aimed to share passion for music with young people. The Summer Tour will take the stage at The Intersection, 133 Grandville Ave. SW, on Friday, Aug. 8, and will feature headliners Jacob Whitesides, Lisa “Aunt Lisa” McQueen and Mac Demy.

Also performing are Alyssa Shouse, Round2Crew, Reed Deming, Dylan Holland, Grant Landis, and Tyler Matl. The all-ages show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $45 to $100; upgrades include meet and greets.

Monty Python’s “Spamalot” Musical

If you’ve seen the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail you already are wary of hares. Those killer rabbits will be joined with by cows, French people, and beautiful showgirls in the hilariously funny musical “Spamalot,” which is based on the film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”

The fourth performance in the 2014 Circle Theater season features the musical, which was written by original Python cast member Eric Idle. The three-time Tony Award winning comedy retells the legend of King Arthur. Bob Fowle, who worked on the tour and consulted for the Broadway production of the musical, is Circle show’s costume designer. The musical is directed by Tom Kaechele.

Performances are held at Aquinas Performing Arts Center, 1607 Robinson Road SE from Aug. 7-9, 13-16, 20-23 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 17 at 5 p.m.

GRAM on the Green

Only two more free music concerts are scheduled for GRAM on the Green including the one tonight on the Wege Plaza in front of the Grand Rapids Art Museum,101 Monroe Center NW. Each event also includes an outdoor bar, food trucks, sketching and games, Zumba, and free entry into the art museum.

Zumba starts at 5:30 p.m while tonight’s concert, from End Times Orchestra, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Next Thursday, Aug. 14, will feature The Moxie Strings. More information is at artmuseumgr.org.

Pirate Take Over Day

In advance of the “Real Pirates” exhibition coming to the Grand Rapids Public Museum, is a Pirate Take Over Day with chances to win prizes and passes from the museum. Five participating restaurants and breweries in downtown Grand Rapids will be marked as stopping points on a treasure map for a Pirate Take Over Day starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9.

Each location will have one piece of a pirate costume, which patrons will search for, collect and wear as they travel downtown. The scavenger hunt ends at the museum, 272 Pearl St. NW, where participants dressed in their new pirate gear are encouraged to take a photo of themselves and post it to the museum’s Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages using the hashtag #piratesGR to enter to win prize packages.
