LONG HILL
The annual NJ Firefighter’s Bicycle Race will be held on July 27 beginning at 11:45 a.m. in downtown Stirling.
The event is a fund raiser for firefighters from around the state and for the Barnabas Hospital Burn Center Foundation; New Jersey’s only burn center.
More than 100 firefighters, both male and female, participate in this event each year. They race on their bicycles while wearing their full firefighting gear, which includes a turn-out coat, bunker pants, helmet, and gloves. This gear weighs about 40 pounds, which makes this race unique.
Firefighters will race around a 2 mile course through the streets of Stirling while being cheered on by hundreds of supporters. The race is followed with a picnic and awards ceremony in the air conditioned Stirling firehouse at 321 Somerset St.
All racers must be active members of a volunteer or paid fire department and they each pay $45 to race. They may pre-register for the race at www.stirlingfd.com or register in person the morning of the race in the Stirling firehouse. Each racer receives a commemorative firefighters t-shirt, attaché bag, gift, and a program plus free lunch after the race.
The pubic is invited to attend at no charge to witness this unusual race, which runs rain or shine. Donations from the public to support this event may be sent to: Bike Race Fund Raiser, Stirling Vol. Fire Dept, 321 Somerset St., Stirling NJ 07980-1126.
There are several other bike races that day ranging from children’s bike races in the morning to adult amateur and professional races in the afternoon. The overall bike race event is named the Freedom Tour Bike Race and it is sponsored by the Long Hill Township Chamber of Commerce. The Firefighters race is sponsored by the Stirling Volunteer Fire Co. under the auspices of co-chairmen firefighters Frank Reilly and Troy Pytell.

MORRISTOWN
The Morristown & Morris Township Library is screening the Dylan documentary film “Don’t Look Back” (1967) on July 30 at 7 p.m.
In 1965, Bob Dylan was on tour of the United Kingdom and was on the strong upswing of his fame. Documentary director D.A. Pennebaker, who some dub as the pre-eminent chronicler of the sixties counter-culture, followed Dylan all over the U.K. from show to show and hotel room to hotel room in order to provide fans and the public a better glimpse at what some believed was the 23 year-old spokesman for a generation.
What ultimately transpired was movie magic. The opening sequence of the film has been repeated in pop culture numerous times from MTV videos to feature length films. Dylan’s taunting of a Time magazine reporter, his back-and-forth contest with a local student who went on to found a major record label, and the on-screen dissolution of his relationship with folk singer Joan Baez, all make the film both humanly uncomfortable and cinematically captivating at the same time. And this does not even include the wonderful concert and back stage performances of Dylan at a pivotal point in his career, nor the numerous celebrities that appear throughout the movie including Donovan, John Mayall, Ginger Baker, Marianne Faithful and even Alan Ginsberg. It is a chance to see a young, cocky and enigmatic Dylan being charming and yet confrontational from almost 50 years before.
This screening is part of an occasional movie series entitled “The Moving Image of Rock,” which shows acclaimed Rock ‘n’ Roll documentaries, dramatic movies and general motion pictures about Rock topics.
This free program is supported through funding from the Friends of the Morristown & Morris Township Library.
MADISON
Two student teachers from Drew University’s Master of Arts in Teaching program have been recognized by the New Jersey State Department of Education as Distinguished Student Teachers.
Only 15 student teachers across the state are given the award each year.
Anna Elson, 22, of West Hartford, Conn., an aspiring social studies teacher, and Gaelan Johnson, 24, of Long Valley, an aspiring English teacher, were honored by the state of New Jersey at a reception held at Rider University.
It is the fourth year in a row that a student teacher from Drew’s MAT program was chosen as a distinguished student teacher.
Both Elson and Johnson were nominated for the distinction by their professors and mentor teachers. They both earned undergraduate degrees from Drew, and professors said they had a deep knowledge of their subject areas and used creative ways to engage their students – including interviewing Iraqi war veterans in the classroom or discussing the poetry of Chinese dissidents.
MORRISTOWN
The 13th annual Two Kids Foundation Charity Car Show, which supports families of pediatric cancer patients, is scheduled for Aug. 3.
In addition to the hundreds of classic, muscle, sports and TV specialty cars, the event will feature fun activities and games for kids, live musical performance and DJ, vendors, and a food court, according to a press release about the event.
All proceeds benefit the Two Kids Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises money to help children that have been diagnosed with cancer and other serious diseases. The car show is the foundation’s primary fundraising event, and has allowed the organization to assist numerous families during difficult times in their lives and the lives of their children for more than a decade. The foundation also hosts an annual dinner dance.
All vehicles are welcome – cars, trucks, motorcycles and military. Dash plaques will be given to the first 600 vehicles, and more than 150 sponsored trophies for entries 25 years or more.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the The Birchwood Manor, which is located at 111 North Jefferson Road, Whippany.

MORRIS PLAINS
The borough council is scheduled to met at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the council chambers of borough hall, 531 Speedwell Ave.
Among the items on the agenda are reviewing the Madison Affordable Housing Corp.’s application to the Morris Plains Planning Board.
CHESTER
The Board of Education, which was scheduled to meet on July 29, has changed the meeting date to July 28. The meeting will be held in the Board of Education Office, 50 North Road, Building 4, starting at 7 p.m..
CHESTER
The township council has canceled their scheduled Aug. 19 meeting due to a lack of a quorum. The next regularly scheduled meeting is Sept. 2.
MOUNT ARLINGTON
The Board of Education has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Mount Arlington Public School, 235 Howard Blvd.
Among the items on the agenda are special education costs, tuition contracts, home instruction and the substitute teacher pay rate.
MORRIS COUNTY
The Board of Chosen Freeholders is scheduled to meet on Monday, at 6:30 p.m., on the fifth floor off the Administration and Records Building, Court Street.
The purpose of the meeting is for discussion of personnel as it relates to the budget, according to an announcement from the Freeholders.

Coming Home Rescue has partnered with the five-time Atlantic League Champion Somerset Patriots to be a part of their “Bark in the Park Nights” on July 30.

The Patriots will provide bowls of water for dogs throughout the concourse and all ticket holders are invited to a special “Yappy Hour” which will take place in the third inning at the Handlebar behind section 214 where dogs can enjoy ice cream treats specially made for them.
