‘Hairspray’ in Georgetown
The Swamp Fox Players will shake up the stage of the historic Strand Theater with “Hairspray,” a Broadway musical and two-time hit movie that goes back to early 1960s Baltimore.
The story follows Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and a big heart, plus a passion to dance, and by gaining a spot on “The Corny Collins Show,” she becomes a teen celebrity who also wants to make a difference for the TV program.

‘Creature Feature’ programs on Wednesdays
The North Myrtle Beach Area Historical Museum has added a “Creature Feature” summer series for 11 a.m. Wednesdays through August, taking turns among marine animals in a showcase developed by Kathy Tiso, a volunteer. Participants will learn specifics about the featured animal’s lifestyle, play a game, and make a take-home craft. Other related activities might include a story or a brief video.
The schedule covers alligators July 16 and Aug. 16, sharks July 23 and Aug. 20, jellyfish July 30 and Aug. 27, and sea turtles Aug. 6. Each program is $2 per child plus admission: $6 ages 13-59, $5 ages 60 and older, $4 ages 4-12, and free ages 3 and younger.
Also, admission includes “ToyTime,” a traveling exhibit of 14 large-scale versions of popular folk toys from around the world, through Nov. 1.

EASY ESCAPES: ‘Chapman’s Charleston, 1863-1864’ exhibit
“Chapman’s Charleston, 1863-1864,” including 33 scenes painted by Conrad Wise Chapman, a Confederate soldier, opens Saturday at the S.C. State Museum in Columbia.
The exhibit, through Jan. 18, covers art during the Civil War, the military defenses of Charleston against the Union, and other artists who worked in the Holy City during the war.
This is included with admission, as is the “South Carolina Unearthed” natural history exhibit, with fossilized remains of a variety of ancient animals such as whales and saber-toothed cats from what is now the Palmetto State.
The museum, 301 Gervais St., continues its summer hours, open daily through Sept. 1: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 1-5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $7 ages 13-61, $6 military and ages 62 and older, $5 ages 3-12, and free ages 2 and younger.
