Unless you’ve got big plans or an all-encompassing summer job, the long summer months off from college can seem endless. Of course, having free time and an opportunity to relax and take a break from school is important and enjoyable but can come with pressures of figuring out what to do with that time.

Here’s a list of 10 things to do this summer while you’re off school.

1. Go to an art show. Summer is prime art show time with many different sorts of art festivals going on outside. Tents filled with artists’ paintings, jewelry, modern art and more line various outdoor shopping areas, streets and other venues pretty much all across different towns and cities in America at various times. Look up when and where there will be art shows near you and then grab some friends and wander around just perusing the artists’ wares.

2. Volunteer at an animal shelter. Many shelters see an influx of animals during the summer as owners put their dogs out in the yard or open windows and have cats and other animals accidentally get loose. Volunteers typically have to be at least 18 years old to work directly with the animals though each shelter has different policies about what volunteers can do based on their experience and some require they attend training. If you like working with animals, volunteering at an animal shelter can be a fun way to pass some time and help out too this summer.

3. Go hiking or camping. If you’re the nature-y type, spend some time in the great outdoors going hiking or camping. No matter where you’re located, there are sure to be great parks and trails somewhere by you, as well as camping grounds not too far away.

So grab your backpack, water bottle and walking shoes and take yourself for a nice hike or invite some friends. Plan an overnight camping trip with your family or a few good friends, grab a tent or just some sleeping bags and prepare for a nice night out under the stars.

4. Hit the nearest beach or lake. Swimming in the local pool can get pretty crowded so pick a sunny day to hit the nearest beach or lake with your family and friends. Besides swimming, lots of local beaches and lakes have marinas where you can rent different kinds of boats, waverunners, or kayaks so you can spend time further out on the water. Plus, you can tan, people-watch, or just lay out with a good book when you’re taking a break from water activities.

5. Take a road trip. If you’ve got a car, access to a car, or a friend with a car, summer is the perfect time to take a road trip. You don’t have to take a long extended trip somewhere far away or even spend the night – even a day trip to the next town over or so can be fun and an adventure. You can check out the shopping scene, local events, or the town’s main attraction for even just a few hours before turning around and heading home.

6. Visit a museum. Go visit a local museum for a few hours. Learn about art, science, history, or whatever else the museum has to offer and display. Many museums also give students a discount on the entrance fee so make sure to bring your student ID with you. Plus museums have deep air conditioning so that’s reason enough to hang around a museum just wandering around for a while.

7. Read those books you’ve been meaning to. With classes, homework, a social life and other time-consuming activities to do and attend at college, reading for pleasure can often fall by the wayside. Summer is the perfect opportunity to make a dent in your reading list, whether you grab a book to read outside while tanning or curl up with a book inside amidst the air conditioning. Check out the newest bestsellers or read that classic you’ve had on your shelf but have never gotten around to.

8. See a movie. Lots of movies are coming out this summer in theaters, including “Transformers: Age of Extinction” which came out this past weekend, and movies like “Tammy,” “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” “Sex Tape” and “Happy Christmas” which all come out sometime in July. Check out showtimes for theaters near you and grab your student ID to get a discount on tickets.

9. Go to a concert. Lots of artists and bands are touring America this summer, including Lady Gaga, Jay Z and Beyonce, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato and more. Check out what artists are coming to venues near you and when they’ll play, and then buy your ticket to their concert for a fun-filled night of awesome live music.

10. Binge-watch a TV show. Feel like doing nothing? Sit back, relax, and cue up your Netflix for a chill day of watching movies, favorite episodes, or binge-watching that TV show you’ve been meaning to add to your watchlist but never got around to. You can stay in PJs all day and just veg out on the couch or in bed with your TV or laptop.

So no matter where you are and whether you have a job or internship, if you’re looking for things to do this summer in your free time, grab some friends or family members and try out one of these 10 fun ideas.
