2014 SUMMER READING PROGRAM AT JERSEY CITY MAIN LIBRARY

The Jersey City Free Public Library (JCFPL) will have this year's summer reading program until Aug. 15, which will feature movies, games, fun book reads, trips, live performances, and more. For kids (Grades K through 5), there will be movies on Mondays at 11:30 a.m., Reading Clubs on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Fridays from noon to 2 p.m., Illustrate-a-Story days from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., and crafts days on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For young adults (Grades 6 through 8), there will be Book Chat on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2 to 4 p.m., crafts on Wednesdays from 2 to 3 p.m., movies on Thursdays at 2 p.m., and Fun Fridays from 2 to 4 p.m. Registration began on June 2, and is still tentatively available at https://nj.evanced.info/jclibrary/sr/homepage.asp or at all 9 branch libraries. RTNA FARMERS MARKET AT NJCU OPENS TO PROVIDE HEALTHY FOOD OPTIONS AND SUPPORT LOCAL FARMS

Redstone, The Neighborhood Association (RTNA), and New Jersey City University (NJCU) have partnered to operate Jersey City's RTNA farmer's market, which will run every Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. through Aug. 28 (except Aug. 14), and will feature local healthy foods vendors such as Farmer Al, which offers fresh and seasonal produce; and Peace.Love.Pops, which makes ice-pops from all-natural, locally sourced ingredients. The farmer's market is the first one to serve Jersey City's Greenville and West Side Neighborhoods, and is located at NJCU's John J. MAYOR FULOP LEADS JERSEY CITY TEEN SUMMIT

Mayor Steve Fulop and the Department of Health and Human Services will partner with Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan New Jersey to host the first annual Jersey City Teen Leadership Summit today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The summit, open to youths aged 15 to 21, is a health and wellness forum for Jersey City youth which aims to encourage youth to make healthy choices in a supportive peer environment. Some issues that will be discussed at the summit include money management, violence, gangs, LGBT issues, and other issues pertaining to urban teens. The summit will also kick off the JC Summer Works initiative, which provides Jersey City's youth with jobs and internships, and also entails career guidance programs on Saturdays throughout the summer to introduce them to college and career opportunities. REBUILDING TOGETHER JERSEY CITY

Rebuilding Together Jersey City, with an American Red Cross grant, will partner with the Hudson County Long Term Recovery Group to rehabilitate 3 homes that were affected by Hurricane Sandy today from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers from these two organizations, as well as volunteers from Pershing LLC and St. Peter's University and other community volunteers will be for that project. The project will also feature a "Morning kickoff" event, in which some members of the Jersey City Council will be speaking 8:30 a.m. at Exeter Rd., located at Jersey City's Country Village area. Afterward, the volunteers will start working on the homes, but they are encouraged to meet at 8 a.m. at Exeter Road for the project. CLIMB OUT OF THE DARKNESS

Hoboken resident Lesley Neadel will host a Climb out of the Darkness fundraising walk today at 11 a.m. at Maxwell Place Park. The walk will start at the park, then go down and around Pier A, and then back up for a picnic lunch. The proceeds from the fundraising walk will benefit Postpartum Progress, Inc., which works to raise awareness about Postpartum depression and other related conditions. CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION TRAINING PROGRAM IN JERSEY CITY

Miracle Temple Church Hall will facilitate a child abuse prevention training program called "Stewards of Children" today from 10 a.m. to noon, as put together by the group Choices. Patrina Wright from Patrina Wright Ministries is the guest speaker. The Choices organization works to educate people across the country on how they can help fight the sexual abuse of children. Registration for its training program costs $10 per person, which goes toward the packet that participants will receive. LATIN SAX CONCERT AT WEST NEW YORK CHURCH

The Church of St. Joseph and the Palisades will have a Latin Sax concert today at 8:15 p.m. at the Upper Church. "A.J. MEERWALD" SAILING AND TOURS

Hudson County and other residents will have the chance to sail New York Bay on the A.J. Meerwald, as well as take part in some dock-side tours, during the next few weeks. During the sailing trip and tours, people can learn about the oyster industry, the ship's history, help hoist the sails, or simply relax and enjoy the views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan. The sailing trips will be held in the morning (10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) today and July 5, in the afternoon (1:30 to 4 p.m.) today, Thursday, and July 5, 6, 11, 14, and 15, and in the evening (6 to 8:30 p.m.) on Thursday, July 5, July 12 and July 13. HOBOKEN BABY PARADE

The Hoboken Historical Museum will have its 13th Annual Baby Parade tomorrow (rain date: July 6), starting at 1 p.m. During the parade, local parents and caregivers are encouraged to dress up themselves, their babies, toddlers and their carriages in costumes and other fine attire, as well as create mini-floats to display at the parade. The parade begins at Sinatra Park, located at Fifth Street and the Hudson River, and continues along the waterfront to Pier A. HUDSON RIVER'S "WALK THE WALKWAY"

The Hudson River Waterfront Conservancy is pleased to announce the fourth annual "Walk the Walkway" series on the Hudson River Walkway. The various walks will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and meet at various locations on different dates. The walk will meet tomorrow at The Hyatt Hotel, 2 Exchange Place, Jersey City. JERSEY CITY KAPPA LEAGUE EVENTS AT HCCC

FIZZ, BOOM, READ! AT HOBOKEN LIBRARY

The Hoboken Library will start its "FIZZ BOOM READ!" summer reading program for local children entering Grades 1 through 5 with a "Chalk the Walk" event on Monday from 10:30 a.m. to noon, in which children will get to draw with chalk provided by the library. Kids participating in the reading program may sign up to read for prizes awarded at 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 minute increments. In addition, there will be a weekly random drawing for one special prize bag. Registration must be done in person at the library, but the hour recording and book reports can be done on-line at any time. The program ends officially on Aug. 9, and there will be a reading celebration on August 13 for all children who have read at least 5 hours and have earned a colored bracelet. JERSEY CITY 2014 SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service have partnered with the Food and Nutrition Services of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the 2014 Summer Food Service Program, which provides healthy summer breakfasts and lunches for qualified summer camps, daycares, not-for-profits, and faith based organizations. HUDSON COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE BUSINESS PROGRAMS

JERSEY CITY FIREWORKS AND FREEDOM FESTIVAL

Mayor Steve Fulop and the Jersey City Council will present the "Jersey City Fireworks and Freedom Festival" on Friday at its Liberty State Park. The festival will run from noon to 9 p.m., and will benefit the Fields of Honor foundation, which runs a college scholarship program for family members of fallen or wounded soldiers. The festival will include musical performances by Craig Morgan and Kristen Redmond, as well as a Budweiser Beer Garden Experience, Brewmaster Tour, and a Clydesdale show with a photo op session for attendees. Moses Lee, a board member of The Open Door NJNY, will do a bikeathon travel by bicycle from Boston to New York on July 5 and 6 to raise funds to help expand its programs. FIRST SUNDAY-OF-THE-MONTH BIRD WALK AT DEKORTE PARK

The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC) and Bergen County Audobon Society (BCAS) will host a free two-hour guided nature walk in DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst on July 6. The walk, which starts at 10 a.m., is free of charge, and will allow participants to search for shorebirds, raptors and other choice birds. METROPOLITAN WATER ALLIANCE MEETING AND ANNUAL CITY OF WATER DAY

RESAVIAN CLUB AT JERSEY CITY RESERVOIR

The Jersey City Reservoir Preservation Alliance is starting a bird-watching club called "The ResAvian Club", and is welcoming people of all ages, regardless of previous bird-watching experience, to join the club. SUMMER RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM

The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce Foundation has announced the launch of the "College, Career, Ready, Academy", a summer residential program for high potential high school students entering their freshman sophomore and junior years. The program will take place at various colleges including New Jersey City University from July 14 to July 18. The program will accept 50 students for each college. Students will learn what colleges and employers expect, gain valuable insights and skills that can be used during the college admissions and career planning processes, and experience college and employment interviews. TALES OF OUR CITIES BOOK FESTIVAL SCOUTING

The Jersey City Free Public Library is now scouting for book authors, poets, spoken word artists, musicians, performers, vendors, publishers and sponsors for its annual book festival. "Tales of Our Cities", which will be held Sept. 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at a new venue – Grove Street Plaza – in the heart of Downtown Jersey City. ST. ANNE'S ANNUAL FESTIVAL

St. Anne's Church will have its annual festival at its location on 3545 Kennedy Blvd. (corner of Congress St.) in Jersey City from July 25 to 27. The festival will feature entertainment, food, games and prizes. PORTA OPENING FOR AUGUST

Smith, a hospitality and design firm based in Asbury Park, will open a second Porta this August. The Porta will be a dynamic Neapolitan pizzeria similar to the one in Asbury Park that opened in 2011.
