A look at some of the events going on in and around the tri-county area arts scene:
New exhibition at MMFA: The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts’ newest exhibit, “In Time We Shall Know Ourselves: Photographs by Raymond Smith,” has opened and will run through Sept. 21.
In the summer of 1974, Smith drove from New England through the South and into the Midwest, camping and photographing people and places he encountered. Forty-two years later, the exhibition and publication of 52 of those photos reveal a self-evident truth: “In time we shall know ourselves.”
The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, located at 1 Museum Drive in Blount Cultural Park, is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday and from noon-5 p.m. Sunday. “Clybourne Park” continues at the Cloverdale Playhouse: Showtimes for this play’s final weekend are 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Cloverdale Playhouse, 960 Cloverdale Road. Previous plays this season have sold out quickly, and this one has a strong connection to a recent Cloverdale production. Playwright Bruce Norris won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize — and 2012 Tony Award — for this modern-day “companion piece” to “A Raisin in the Sun” (which played in May at the Playhouse). Due to some mature language, the play is suggested for audiences age 14 and older. General admission tickets are $18, and student and group rates are available for $10. Capitol Sounds Concert Band at the Davis: The Capitol Sounds Concert Band will host its annual fundraiser concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts, 251 Montgomery St. Tickets are $15 each and are available for purchase online now at http://capitolsounds.org/shop/syncopated-summer-tickets/ . The family-friendly concert will include some Americana and a big band spectacular with vocalist Barbara Stapp Blanks singing George Gershwin’s classic “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.”
“Pinkalicious” weekend at the Wetumpka Depot: The Wetumpka Depot Players will present a children’s musical based on the popular book “Pinkalicious” at 7 p.m. Friday, 2 . and 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. June 29. Tickets are available online at wetumpkadepot.com or at the box office. The Depot Theatre is at 300 S. Main St. in downtown Wetumpka. “Pinkalicious” recently was named as one of the top 50 children’s books of the last 25 years. “Pinkalicious the Musical” tells the story of a headstrong little girl who loves the color pink so much that she can’t stop eating pink cupcakes, despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe.
On the horizon
The Alabama Shakespeare Festival presents Disney and Cameron McIntosh’s “Mary Poppins” July 16-27. Several weekend and matinee performances have already sold out. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins (Alice Sherman) arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again. “Mary Poppins,” directed by ASF Producing Artistic Director Geoffrey Sherman, showcases memorable songs including “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Jolly Holiday,” “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!”
The Millbrook Community Players present “Grease” July 10-12, 17-19 and 24-26 at the Millbrook Theatre, 5720 Main St. in Millbrook. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. except July 20, which is at 2 p.m. Tickets for adults are $10 in advance and $12 day of show, and for children age 6 to 12, $8 in advance and $10 day-of-show. Bill Cosby, one of America’s most famous and beloved comedians and TV personalities, will bring his “Far From Finished” tour to the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre at 8 p.m. Oct. 24.
