Music for All returns to Ball State with summer camp, live concerts

MUNCIE, INDIANA (NEWS) - They're back! High school instrumental music students and high school and middle school band directors will flock to Ball State again this summer.  From June 21-28, the university will host the annual Music for All Symposium for the fourth year.

Presented by Yamaha, the symposium provides these students and directors the opportunity to engage in a week of instruction with renowned teachers, artists and fellow campers from more than 30 states and abroad. As part of the symposium experience, the Muncie community can attend Music for All's evening concerts and events. These performances include:

Yamaha Young Performing Artists: 8 p.m. Monday, June 23, Emens Auditorium

The Yamaha Young Performing Artists (YYPA) recognizes outstanding musicians from classical, jazz and contemporary music. Winners of this competition are invited to attend an all-expense paid weekend awards ceremony at the Music for All Summer Symposium, receive a performance opportunity with national press coverage and participate in workshops designed to launch a professional music career. This performance is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required.

Atlantic Brass Quintet: 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, Emens Auditorium

Widely acclaimed as one of the world's finest brass ensembles, the Atlantic Brass Quintet has toured the nation along with more than a dozen countries across four continents, performing a unique repertoire spanning Praetorius, Monteverdi and Bach; Etler, Stravinsky and Rands; and  music from the streets of Brazil, Cuba, the Balkans, and New Orleans. The winner of six international chamber music competitions, the quintet's distinct sound and inviting stage presence has won praise from scores of critics.  Tickets are available at the Emens Auditorium ticket office or through Ticketmaster.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy: 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, Emens Auditorium 

Since its arrival on the music scene in 1993 in a legendary residency at LA's Derby nightclub, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, named famously after an autograph by blues legend Albert Collins, has sold millions of records with its notable hits, including "Go Daddy-O," "You & Me & the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight (Baby)," and "Mr. Pinstripe Suit." The band has appeared in hundreds of movies and television shows and has sold out concerts from the Hollywood Bowl to Lincoln Center, appearing on TV shows from Leno to Conan, "Dancing with the Stars" to Super Bowl XXXIII. Christian Howes and Southern Exposure: 8 p.m. Thursday, June 26, Emens Auditorium 

Nominated recently for Violinist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, Christian Howes has been praised by critics as one of today's most intriguing young jazz violinists. He performs worldwide with his own ensembles and as a guest soloist with orchestras and bands, and he is widely regarded as one of the leaders in jazz violin. His performances are often accompanied by educational outreach activities with his most recent album on Resonance Records, "Southern Exposure," featuring guest accordionist Richard Galliano. Drum Corps International Central Indiana (DCI): 7 p.m. Friday, June 27, Scheumann Stadium

Seven of DCI's top corps showcase an early view of their 2014 shows, featuring the Blue Stars, Carolina Crown, The Cavaliers, Colts, Phantom Regiment, Pioneer and the Troopers. Order tickets for the DCI show at dci.org or call317-275-1212.
