Residents and visitors to Irwin and North Huntingdon are going to get an earful this summer.

Free performances will be on tap starting this weekend during Irwin's Ethnic Food Festival and Craft Show along Main Street with nearly 30 crafters and food booths.

The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is expected draw some 3,500 people, will feature music with an eastern European flair starting at 8:30 a.m. with Yunko and the Ukrainiums.

Mikey Dee and his Balkan Boys with a guest appearance by Grammy Award winning musician Dick Tady will perform from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; and the Trafford Junior Tamburitzans will perform dance and music selections at noon.

A series of summer concerts in the Norwin area kicks off at 7 p.m. on June 19 with the Penn-Trafford Community Band performing at Hickory Pavilion in Oak Hollow Park in North Huntingdon.

The 65-member orchestra, which is in its sixth year, performs popular marches, big-band sounds, patriotic songs, inspirational music and TV and movie themes.

On the same night, the first of three Art & Jazz Nites in Irwin this summer will be held at 5 p.m. with performances at various locations in downtown Irwin. Scheduled artists include Jimmy Sapienza & Some Guys Named Moe, and Jessica Lee and the Rick Purcell Trio.

“People don't necessarily have to travel to Pittsburgh for entertainment because there's so much great talent being offered right here in their own communities,” said Irwin Councilwoman Gail Macioce, a jazz singer who regularly performs in the borough.

“These events also help promote our community because when people come for a show or other activity they eat in our restaurants, shop in our stores and spread the word about what we have to offer when they return home.”
