Sky Movies Drama, 9.45pm

A sprawling rock opera based on a hit Broadway show, Adam Shankman's 'Rock of Ages' is messy and a little long but very likeable, mainly because it wholeheartedly embraces its essential campness.

Julianne Hough stars as a smalltown girl who arrives in Los Angeles with high hopes of making it in the music business. When she's mugged and left stranded on Sunset Strip, a young man befriends her and gets her a waitressing job at a legendary rock venue called the Bourbon Room. The club is run by an ageing rocker called Dennis Dupree (a hilarious Alec Baldwin), but has fallen on hard times, and will only survive if flashy rock star Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise, above) agrees to play a free concert there.

Tom Cruise hams it up commendably and Russell Brand co-stars. Passport to Pimlico (1949)
