Tickets for the May 6 performance by the Nashville Symphony at Calsonic Arena are now on sale.

The symphony will be led by assistant conductor Vinay Parameswaran in his Shelbyville debut.

The symphony's casual, family-friendly Shelbyville concert, a tradition since 1989, will also include the Cascade High School Band, directed by David Lucich, playing on its own and joining the symphony for the grand finale. The Motlow Community Jazz Band, directed by David Bethea, will appear as well, providing pre-concert and intermission entertainment.

The program will include favorites such as the "William Tell Overture" and selections from Aaron Copland's "Rodeo." Even those who aren't familiar with classical music will recognize some of the melodies from movies or TV shows.

The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the symphony's "instrument petting zoo," which allows children and adults alike to touch and try symphonic instruments under the guidance of trained volunteers. Weather permitting, this will take place on the plaza in front of the arena; in case of rain, it will be moved indoors.

At 6 p.m., the Motlow jazz band will begin its pre-concert and there will be an an art show on the arena concourse featuring works from school children, professional artists and everyone in between.

The tickets are available at the Elm Street main office of First Community Bank.

Children and students will be admitted to the concert free of charge, while adult general admission will be $5. Box seats will also be available, in quantities of 6 or 8, for $10 each.

The low ticket prices have been made possible through the years through the contributions of sponsors.

This year, the Nashville Symphony no longer has an overall sponsor for its community concert series, and so sponsors are being sought for the local concert, say local steering committee chairs John Carney and Dawn Holley.

Interested sponsors can contact Dan Tonelson with the symphony at 615-687-6531 for more information about sponsorship levels.
