Weekend Planner: 16 Things To Do In Los Angeles

LAist gets a lot of event announcements, and we comb through them all to bring you a curated list of what’s happening in LA this weekend, including these 16 events. FRIDAY, MARCH 14

TV TALK: PaleyFest 2014 has a great slate of programming this weekend, beginning with the cast of Orange Is the New Black at 7 pm at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. OITNB cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jason Biggs, Laura Prepon, Natasha Lyonne, Kate Mulgrew, Danielle Brooks, Uzo Aduba, Taryn Manning, Yael Stone, Laverne Cox, Michael Harney, Lorraine Toussaint and Jenji Kohan, creator & executive producer. 7 pm. Tickets: $25-75+ fees. [Saturday’s show is How I Met Your Mother and Sunday’s show is the 10th Anniversary and Lost reunion.

FILM: Jacques Demy’s 1964 French New Wave musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg screens at the Nuart for its 50th anniversary revival with a new digital restoration. At the 7:30 pm show, actor George Chakiris (who starred in The Young Girls of Rochefort, a collaboration with Demy, actress Catherine Deneuve and composer Michel Legrand) introduces the film and discusses his collaborations with Debra Levine, blogger of artsmeme.com. The film screens through March 20.

STORYTELLING: Beth Lapides (of UnCabaret) hosts Say the Word: The New Me, a night of comedic storytelling about “rebirth and reinvention” at the Skirball. Scheduled readers and storytellers include comedy writers C. Brian Smith, Jay Kogen and Peter Mehlman, as well as stand-up comedians Wendy Liebman and Ian Harvie. Cocktails and snacks available for purchase. 8 pm. Tickets: $8-$15.

CIRCUS The Australian-based Circa presents a mix of acrobatics, dance, light, music and projection that redefines the idea of a circus. The troupe takes over The Eli & Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica with performances at 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets: $47-$75.

FILM: It’s time for another Horrible Movie Night at 9 pm at NerdMelt. The audience is invited to roast the movie on screen—with the best one-liners of the night winning prizes. Hosts John Mathot (Disney’s Phineas & Ferb) and Susan Wright (The Because Show podcast) present Voyage of the Rock Aliens (1984). “It’s a bizarre mix of sci-fi, comedy, and music, featuring singing aliens, asinine robots and gigantic hair.” Featured comics include Kyle Kinane and Christian Spicer. Tickets: $8.

ARTNIGHT: It’s time for another ArtNight Pasadena from 6-10 pm with free admission to 16 arts and cultural venues. There’s also a wide range of activities from dance, music, visual arts and other activities. Free shuttle buses—and even an organized CICLE bike ride tour help provide transportation to each location, including the Armory Center for the Arts, The Pasadena Museum of California Art and more.

LIT: British author Debz Hobbs-Wyatt is at Stories LA in Echo Park at 7.30pm to discuss her latest book, While No One Was Watching. The book is an exploration of JFK’s assassination, from another perspective—this time focusing on the disappearance of a little girl.

MUSIC:
Rendezvous, a monthly soundtrack-themed club, brings people together to listen to various musical scores. Guests include Mathieu Schreyer (KCRW 89.9FM, LA) and a surprise guest. Live visuals by The Cinefamily's Marcus Herring. Cash bar with $5 beers. Free admission.

SATURDAY, MARCH 15

ARTWALK: The 8th Annual Airport Artwalk takes place on Saturday from 12-5 pm at the Santa Monica Airport. The public is invited to explore the open studios, art and demonstrations. There will be performances, live musi cand food trucks in the airport’s converted hangars, too. Free admission.

ART: Kayne Griffin Corcoran gallery holds an opening reception from 6-8 pm featuring the first exhibition of work by John Tweddle, curated by Alanna Heiss. The gallery also presents the work by the sculptor Ken Price (1935-2012). Price’s work, Unit 6, was first exhibited as part of Happy’s Curios, the artist’s 1978 retrospective at LACMA.

ART: Giant Robot first began in 1994 as a zine, then magazine now it’s a website, shop and gallery. It’s celebrating an anniversary tonight with 20 Years Art x Mags Exhibition, with an opening reception from 5-10 pm. The list of artists in the show includes: Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Ryan McGinness, Rob Sato, Geoff McFetridge, Pete Fowler, kozyndan, Shintaro Ohata, Matt Furie, Albert Reyes, Shizu Saldamando, Souther Salazar, Megan Whitmarsh, Stella Lai, Saelee Oh, Seonna Hong, Adrian Tomine, Amy Davis, Ai Yamaguchi, James Jean, Heisuke Kitazawa, Jeff Soto, Scott Wilkowski, Mari Inukai, Sean Chao, David Horvath, Dehara Yukinori, Kohei Yamashita, Luke Chueh, Bobby Hundreds, Ako Castuera, Edwin Ushiro, Yoskay Yamamoto, 326, Rachell Sumpter and more TBA. The exhibition runs through April 2.

MUSIC: LACMA opens its 2014 Art & Music series on Saturday with a concert that celebrates the current exhibition Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic (on view through July 27). Fittingly, playing in concert is Calder Quartet and red fish blue fish as they play contemporary composer Jason Treuting's "Oblique Music." Tickets: $25, LACMA member & seniors 62+: $18; students with ID: $5.

PUPPETS: The Sock Puppet Sitcom Theater troupe presents Roseanne (1988) on Saturday at The Echo. Music by Rachel Butera begins at 7:30 pm and sock puppets start promptly at 8 pm. The ensemble for Roseanne includes Jennifer Kenyon, Wilder Smith, Stephanie Riggio, Keith Ferguson, John McNight, Charley Knapp and Mark Hayward. Tickets: $10. This show is 21+.

FILM: There’s a great double feature at Cinefamily on Saturday. Joe Swanberg (director of Drinking Buddies) counts Paul Mazursky one of his favorite filmmakers. Both directors will be in attendance for a conversation and screening of Mazursky’s Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice at 5 pm followed by Drinking Buddies at about 8 pm. Tickets: $14/free for members.

SUNDAY, MARCH 16

ART TALK The Craft and Folk Art Museum presents an artist talk with Timothy Washington at 3 pm. He’ll discuss messages and meanings in his first solo, found-object museum exhibition, Timothy Washington: Love Thy Neighbor. RSVP requested to rsvp@cafam.org. General admission: $7.

OPERA: The Long Beach Opera presents The Death of Klinghoffer, John Adams' 1991 opera about the terrorist hijacking of the Achille Lauro on Sunday at 7 pm at the Long Beach Terrace Theater. The opera is a partner production to the LA Phil’s upcoming Minimal Jukebox Festival. Prices range from $29 to $160. The opera is also performed on March 22.
