Mike Haskey mhaskey@ledger-enquirer.com The red team from Northside High School came to a grinding halt Saturday morning when the wheels of their bed, constructed of cardboard and duct tape, came flying off while competing in the 2013 VIP Bed Race in Uptown Columbus. They were racing against another team from Northside at the time.The event, in its fifth year, is a fundraiser for Valley Interfaith Promise Inc. “Vocal Concert: A Labor of Love”: Columbus State’s University Singers and Choral Union will perform a concert celebrating love starting. Show time is at 7:30 p.m. in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall, 900 Broadway. The performance will feature songs from various composers and eras. Admission is free. Fort Benning Adventure Race: This annual event begins at 9 a.m. at Uchee Creek. The five-hour event includes mountain biking, trekking and “mystery events.” Entry fee is $40 for one, $60 for pairs and $75 for teams of three. Prizes include a two-night stay at a Florida resort. The Tams and The Drifters: Head over to Front Porch of the South on Saturday for performances by Robert Lee Smith’s The Tams and The Drifters. Folks will get a free hot dog from Dinglewood between 7-8 p.m. Tickets for the show are $30. Smith, who is the only original member of The Tams remaining, said this week that folks can expect “one of the best shows, a Tams trademark. Bring your dancing shoes!” Smith, who has been performing professionally since 1962, said the group will sing its new record “Talking About My Girl.” Both groups will perform for about 75 minutes. Father-daughter dance: The Russell County Child Advocacy Center hosts this annual event. This year’s theme is “When You Wish Upon a Star.” Space is limited so you are encouraged to get tickets early; all ages welcome. Starts at 5 p.m., for pictures; the dance is from 6-9 p.m. at Central High, 2400 Dobbs Drive, in Phenix City, Ala. Tickets are $35 for the pair, with $10 for each additional daughter. “A Little Princess”: Tickets are now on sale for New Horizon Theatre’s production of this classic. Audiences will identify with Sara, our heroine, as she begins her adventures in “Miss Minchin’s Select Seminary for Young Ladies”; laugh with her as she brings happiness to others; weep with her as her fortune changes from rich girl to poor orphan; and rejoice with her when strange events bring still another reversal of her destiny. Ultimate Bridal Expo: Make plans to attend this year’s Ultimate Bridal Expo at the RiverMill Event Centre, 3715 First Ave. The event will be 1-5 p.m. and will feature vendors from around the region, along with the Daphne’s Bridal Boutique fashion show at 4 p.m. The first 500 people to attend will receive a free gift bag. Fourth Annual Camellia Show: Sanctioned by the American Camellia Society, this annual event will have 20-plus judges plus categories for growers of all levels. Mardi Gras scavenger hunt: There will be crash prizes, pizza and Mardi Gras cake at the hunt, which begins and ends at the David H. Aldrich Community Life Center in Pine Mountain, Ga. Admission is $25/car; there is a $5 discount if you bring your dog or pre-register. Proceeds benefit the David H. Aldrich Community Life Center and the The Humane Society of Harris County. “Sock Hop Homicide”: Sherlock’s Mystery Dinner Theatre returns starting Feb. 14. The official description reads, “Rydell High School’s annual dance competition has been selected by TV’s ‘National Bandstand’ to be broadcast all over the country and Mr. Johnny Fontaine himself is coming to host the show! But Johnny has a dark secret.” Shows run through March 22; show times are at 7 p.m. each night at the Downtown Historic Marriott Hotel. Tickets are $48.50.
