Kim Gordon plans Minneapolis solo gig

 

 

The sort of rocking art-punk event we’re accustomed to seeing at Walker Art Center, indie-rock heroine Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth fame will bring her new music project Body/Head to the other big museum in town, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, for a Feb. 27 concert. Her guitar-driven duo will perform in the MIA’s 600-capacity Reception Hall, where Twin Cities hip-hop artist Dessa performed last February. Following recent appearances at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Detroit’s Museum of Contemporary Art, Body/Head was picked to kick off a new series called Sound.Art.MIA, a pet project of contemporary art curator (and former Walker staffer) Elizabeth Armstrong. Tickets ($20) go on sale Tuesday via ArtsMia.org. Gordon reportedly requested local banjo experimentalist Paul Metzger to open her first Twin Cities gig since the 2011 breakup of Sonic Youth.

'Gravity' wins top Directors Guild award

Alfonso Cuaron was awarded the top film honor from the Directors Guild of America for “Gravity” on Saturday night, giving the lost-in-space saga an edge on the journey to the Academy Awards.

In the recent bustle of Hollywood honors, “Gravity,” David O. Russell’s con caper “American Hustle” and Steve McQueen’s historical epic “12 Years a Slave” had been competing in the tightest three-way Oscar race in years.

But Cuaron’s film now has the upper hand for the best picture and director Academy Awards, and with 10 Oscar nominations, it is likely to gain the most ­statuettes on Hollywood’s biggest night March 2. “American Hustle” also has 10 nominations, but in tougher races.

Jehane Noujaim won the documentary prize for “The Square,” which depicts the tumult of the Egyptian revolution beginning in 2011. Steven Soderbergh, the “sex, lies, and videotape” and “Ocean’s Twelve” filmmaker, won the TV movie and miniseries prize for HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra,” which recounted the relationship of Liberace and his lover, Scott Thorson.

 

Biebs sighting: Panamanian radio and TV host Eddy Vasquez says pop star Justin Bieber has been relaxing on a beach in Panama on a vacation from the United States, where the singer faces DWI charges after being arrested last week. Vasquez was filming a show about 90 miles west of Panama City, when he spotted Bieber and his entourage walking along the beach.
